Baseball is a lot like life

Spring is here and the crack of the bat is being heard throughout the ballpark. With two aspiring major leaguers of my own I have participated in my fair share of America’s favorite past time. The parents at these games are often more fun to watch than the kids. Even though I will have to admit there is nothing better than watching a T-ball season opener. You are almost always guaranteed to see at least one batter smack the ball and then accidentally head down the third base line! Oh the days of innocence.

Have you ever been to a little league baseball game where the best team didn’t win? Maybe things didn’t turn out the way they should have because an umpire made a bad call or a great player made an unusually bad play. Foaming at the mouth and screaming at the top of their lungs, otherwise loving and gentle parents turn into raging militant sports fanatics.

Haywood Hale Broun once wrote, “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” I’ve heard it said that you can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation. For the Christian it’s not about always having to win. It’s how you play the game that counts.

Ecclesiastes 9:11 makes it clear that the fastest runner doesn't always win the race and the strongest warrior doesn't always win the battle. The best player won’t always win. Like baseball, there are many times that life just isn’t fair.

Detroit Tigers Sportscaster Ernie Harwell once said, "Baseball is a lot like life. It's a day-to-day existence, full of ups and downs. You make the most of your opportunities in baseball as you do in life."

2 Timothy 4:7 says, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race and I have remained faithful.” Anyone can be a good winner. Not everyone can be a good loser.

How you lose reveals who you really are. As Christians our greatest responsibility is to remain faithful to our calling not to how the call was made.

So sports fans remember 1 Corinthians 10:31, “Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, (i.e. play baseball) do it all for the glory of God.” It’s not about winning. As in life, it’s about finishing well.
